Detergents on the market are generally detergents with active ingredients in the form of LAS (Linear Alkylbenzen Sulfonate) surfactants derived from petroleum. The problem that arises due to the use of LAS surfactants is the problem of biodegradation. During use, detergent is difficult to degrade by bacteria in the water, so detergent waste remains in the water, resulting in accumulation of detergent in the water. Accumulation of detergent in water can be a source of pollution in water. This can cause environmental damage, especially in aquatic habitats. Another problem that arises is the limited availability of raw materials for LAS, namely petroleum, because it is a non-renewable natural resource.

The shift of the times to the era of products that are more environmentally friendly has encouraged the industry to create detergents that are environmentally friendly. The solution to this problem can be overcome by using surfactants based on oleochemicals. One example of an oleochemical-based surfactant is Methyl Ester Sulfonate (MES).

MES is a surfactant derived from the sulfonation of methyl esters. MES has several advantages when compared to LAS, namely; MES has better detergency in hard water than other anionic surfactants. In other words, MES has a high tolerance for the presence of calcium ions. MES surfactant compared to LAS (Linear Alkylbenzen Sulfonate) surfactant, with the same concentration has higher detergency. In addition, MES is also more excellent bio-biodegradability; improved calcium hardness tolerance during the washing process, and superior detergency.
