The Power of Surfactant in Laundry Detergent

Surfactants are one of the key technologies behind modern laundry detergents. They help water wet fabric, interact with oily soil, lift contaminants and keep removed soil dispersed so it can be rinsed away.

Quick takeaway

A good laundry detergent is a system: surfactants do major soil-lifting work, while builders, enzymes, polymers and other ingredients can support performance.

1. What Is a Surfactant?

A surfactant—short for surface-active agent—is a molecule that changes the behavior of a liquid at a surface. In laundry cleaning, surfactants are especially important because they reduce water's surface tension, allowing the wash solution to wet textile surfaces more effectively.

Surfactant molecules generally contain a water-compatible portion and a water-avoiding portion. That dual nature allows them to interact with both water and many forms of soil.

Why this matters: Water alone may struggle to wet and remove oily or hydrophobic soil. Surfactants help bridge the gap between water and soil, making the cleaning process more effective.

The American Cleaning Institute explains that surfactants are a major cleaning component and that different surfactants can perform differently against different soil types. ACI: About Cleaning Product Ingredients.

2. How Surfactants Work in Laundry

Think of a wash cycle as a coordinated process. Water provides the medium, detergent provides chemical energy, the washer provides mechanical energy, and temperature can contribute thermal energy. ACI describes these three cleaning energies as working together.

01 — WettingSurfactants lower surface tension so wash water can spread over and penetrate textile surfaces.
02 — Soil InteractionThe hydrophobic portion of surfactant molecules can interact with oily and hydrophobic soil.
03 — Lifting & EmulsificationSurfactant structures help loosen soil from the fabric and keep it associated with the wash liquor.
04 — RinsingRemoved soil remains dispersed in water and can leave the fabric during rinsing.

This is why “strong detergent” is not simply about a high concentration of one chemical. Performance depends on formulation balance, surfactant selection, water conditions, mechanical action, temperature, time and dosage.

3. The Micelle Effect: How Surfactants Capture Soil

When surfactants are present in water at suitable concentrations, they can organize into structures called micelles. The water-compatible parts face the surrounding water while water-avoiding parts are oriented away from it.

Hydrophobic soil can associate with the interior of these structures. This helps keep oily soil suspended in the wash solution instead of allowing it to simply settle back onto fabric.

Surfactant power is not just “making foam.” Cleaning performance is strongly connected to wetting, soil interaction, emulsification, dispersion and rinse-away behavior.

Foam can be visually noticeable, but foam height alone is not a reliable measurement of laundry cleaning performance. A low-foam detergent can still be highly effective when its chemistry is engineered for the washing system.

For a deeper explanation, see the American Cleaning Institute's Chemistry of Cleaning.

4. Types of Surfactants Used in Detergents

Surfactants are commonly classified by their electrical charge in solution. Laundry detergents frequently rely on anionic and nonionic surfactant technologies because they can provide useful cleaning properties.

TypeTypical roleWhy formulators use it
AnionicStrong soil removal and detergencyUseful for many particulate and oily soils; often a major cleaning component.
NonionicWetting, detergency and oil/grease interactionCan complement anionic surfactants and offer useful performance across conditions.
AmphotericMildness, compatibility and foam-related functionsCommon in personal-care and specialized cleaning systems.
CationicConditioning, antistatic or antimicrobial functions in selected productsOften used for functions other than primary laundry detergency.

ACI's cleaning terminology guide describes anionic and nonionic surfactants as important ingredients in household soaps and detergents and explains their role in lowering surface tension and helping remove and suspend soils.

5. The Main Benefits of Surfactant Technology

💧 Better WettingHelps wash water spread across textile fibers instead of behaving like isolated droplets.
🫧 Soil LiftingHelps loosen soil from the fabric surface during washing.
🧈 Oil & GreaseHydrophobic interactions help detergent systems address oily and greasy soils.
🚿 Soil SuspensionHelps keep removed soil dispersed so it can be carried away with wash and rinse water.

These functions are especially important in laundry because textile fibers can hold a mixture of body oils, food residues, dust, particulate soil and other contaminants.

6. Surfactants Are Powerful—But They Do Not Work Alone

One of the most important ideas in detergent science is that surfactants are part of a formulation system. Other ingredient families can support the conditions in which surfactants perform.

Ingredient familyGeneral functionHow it can complement surfactants
BuildersWater-conditioning and alkalinity supportCan reduce the impact of hardness ions and help maintain useful washing conditions.
EnzymesTarget specific organic soilsCan break down protein or starch residues into smaller components that surfactants can help remove.
Oxygen bleachOxidative stain chemistryCan support removal of suitable colored or oxidizable stains.
PolymersSoil-management and formulation functionsCan help manage redeposition and contribute to formulation stability/performance.
Optical brightenersVisual whiteness/brightnessCan improve the visual appearance of suitable fabrics by optical effects.

7. How Surfactant Technology Fits the BeZacT Powder Concept

BeZacT Powder is positioned as a multi-system laundry formulation. Its supplied composition includes Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and C12-14 Secondary Alcohols Ethoxylated EO 9, representing an anionic + nonionic surfactant combination.

Formulation story: the surfactant system provides the core soil-interaction and detergency layer, while builders, enzymes, sodium percarbonate, TAED, polymers and other components can address additional cleaning and formulation needs.

This is a better technical explanation than simply saying “more ingredients means more power.” The number of ingredients alone does not establish superior cleaning. A defensible performance claim should be supported by controlled comparative testing.

8. Surfactants, Biodegradation & the Environment

Cleaning performance is only one part of modern detergent chemistry. Surfactants eventually enter wastewater systems, so environmental fate and aquatic toxicity are important formulation considerations.

The U.S. EPA's Safer Choice program evaluates surfactants using criteria that consider characteristics such as biodegradation, degradation products and aquatic toxicity. Importantly, the presence of an ingredient on EPA's Safer Chemical Ingredients List does not by itself mean a product is EPA Safer Choice certified; product-level review is required.

For formulators and brands, this is a useful lesson: environmental claims should be tied to verified ingredient data and actual product certification rather than inferred from a single ingredient.

See the EPA Safer Choice Criteria for Surfactants and the Safer Chemical Ingredients List.

9. Frequently Asked Questions

What does surfactant do in laundry detergent?

Surfactants reduce surface tension, improve wetting, interact with soil and help keep removed soil dispersed in wash water so it can be rinsed away.

Why do detergents use more than one surfactant?

Different surfactants can have different strengths across soil types and washing conditions, so formulators may combine surfactant technologies to achieve a broader performance profile.

Does more foam mean better cleaning?

No. Foam height is not a direct measure of detergency. Cleaning depends on formulation chemistry and the combined effects of chemical, mechanical and thermal energy.

Can surfactants remove every stain?

No. Laundry contains chemically diverse soils. Enzymes, builders, oxidants, polymers and mechanical action can provide complementary functions for different stain types.
